GANG VIOLENCE:

The community of Watts seems to be undergoing a shift in atmosphere, reports the Daily News, as the area’s gang violence has been decreasing, thanks in part to the Watts Gang Task Force. In terms of statistics, homicides were halved last year from the year before–11 in 2007 as compared to the 24 in 2006, and 2007 saw “a three-month stretch without a single slaying. Gang homicides for the approximately 1-square-mile home to an estimated 2,000 gangsters dropped from 13 in 2006 to eight last year.” The larger area, known as the South Bureau, which includes 35,000 Watts residents, also saw a marked decrease in homicides from 2006 to last year.

Residents and officials alike are aware of the fact that life these days seems safer in Watts, particularly in housing projects like Jordan Downs, where many of its over three thousand residents are now experiencing a more peaceful daily life, and allowing their kids to go outside and play with less trepidation. There, residents endured only one homicide last year, compared to many more in previous years.

The community is trying to unite its residents to rise against the oppressions of gangs in our neighborhood hundreds of residents have walk and protest the gangs. Gang violence has effected the way the communty is seen all over the place. many oirganizations are trying to fight this but it’s really not showing any progress organizations such as the L.A anti-gang program

HISTORY: if you want to learn some more about how gangs came to be… vist this website

I recently read a good book that talk about the history of Los Angeles and how Gangs have played an important role. the book is called City of Quartz by Mike Davis.

A really good movie to watch is American Me. its a movie about the struggles of chicano gangs in Los Angeles

UNEMPLOYMENT

The unemployment rate rose past 5% last month and the economy lost more jobs than expected, the Labor Department reported today, deepening the growing consensus among economists that the country is in a recession.

The jobless rate reached 5.1% in March, its highest level since the job losses that followed Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. Employers reported that nonfarm payrolls shrank by 80,000 jobs – the sharpest drop in five years. That followed losses of a net 76,000 jobs each in January and February, for a total contraction of 232,000 jobs over three months

In a downtown, new entrants, re-entrants and job losers all compete for a dwindling number of jobs,” Bernstein said. “That’s what pushes unemployment up in a recession, and that’s what we saw in March.”

All together, the Labor Department said, a net 914,000 workers have lost jobs in the last 12 months and 7.8 million are out of work. And those who are employed saw their hourly earnings go up 3.6% in the last year – failing to keep up with the current rate of inflation, which is about 4%.

Job losses affect more than just the immediate family but also affect the whole community. Community programs, labor unions and government-sponsored programs have been established to assist people who are unemployed. It is a global problem and thousands of people lose their jobs every year. It is therefore not a shame to ask for unemployment help.

There are a number places a person can go to find unemployment help. The ones listed in this article serve a guideline.

Unemployment Insurance Programs
The Unemployment offices provide unemployment compensation for people who lose their jobs. The offices offer benefit payments of a percentage of your wages earned over a period. Contact your nearest office to apply for benefits as soon as possible after a job loss. You will need to complete a claim form and seek for new employment. These offices also offer training and job search services.

In some countries like South Africa, you can also contact the Department of Labor to register for possible jobs. The Canada Employment Office has a Self Employment Program to assist unemployed workers to start their own business. They provide a business plan and continued support. The unemployed person is still eligible to receive benefits while he is in the process of setting up the business. The USA offices offer unemployment help through benefits and job lists.

a book that can help you better understand unemployment is called the unemployment survival guide

heres a couple of links to web sites:

How are certian schools different?

example: heres a picture of beverly hills high swimming pool at schools like L.A jordan hign school we dont even own a pool we have to go to a park to swim for competitions and practices. why is it that beverly hills high school gets to own there own swimming pool, and kids from the “hood” as they may call dont barely get the chance to practice because of transpatation , when we could have one in our own school. maybe im trippin or something another thing i found interesting is take a look at there school period. when i first looked at the picture i thought it was a college why is it that there high school is in better learning habbitat and a healthy environment. Our high school they placed us next to factories were old missles and army supplies from years ago that blew up and came upon our campus to me that is a very hazardess problem that needs to be fixed. i bet beverly hills high school never had that problem. or came close to having itheres one of the good pictures that the school trys to display but even at that it dosent compare to good ol beverly ills high school

AS YOU CAN SEE ON THIS PICTURE ARE SCHOOL ID SURROUNDED BY FACTORIES THAT IS BAD FOR OR HEALTH BUT IT EEMS LIKE IT DOSENT MATTER BECAUSE NO ONE HAS EVEN TRIED TO ATTEMP TO DO ANYTHING.

With saying that i think that there is a couple of changes that can be done to at least help improve our school. heres a book called IMPROVING SCHOOLS this book speaks for itself on how this may help you or if you were interested in knowing what the book is about. Heres a website link http://main.edc.org/theme/schools.asp this website will help you on if you were interested in helping our schools and making them better so we can look like BHHS

Here a movie that will help give ideas for children in schools like ours the movie is called WALKOUT this movie is about how student didnt like what was going oon in there schools so they decided to take matters into there own hands by walking outta school. this is an movie that i recommend to you to watch one day. if you think the other two examples i gave you were boring this one will defantaly catch your attention.

The issue is that why beverly hills have to be better than l.a jordan high school. If you gone make one school perfect make the other one’s perfect to i know the students mess up sometimes but we trynna get it rite so are school can be a better and safer place. The issue is so imporant that kids are getting shot after school we need more security cameras or more security. That’s what we need to make this school so perfect that white people wanna go here. Because if we dont make it right just ain’t one person gone fail we all gone fail that’s why we need to do good on are CAHSEE and all the testes we need to be the bestest school out there. So are score a be the highest score anybody can think of. That’s why it’s so imporant people don’t relize how serius this is like for real we need to get it together.

The thing that cause this promblem was that we be having meeting about the school sometimes and we just was thinking if them white people out in beverly hills can do it we can to. Well not just white people but you know blacks and whites we just trynna get to the top like beverly hills school is school. And do better thats how this promblem had started and the issue is that we need more supplies and alot of stuff that we can work on we got alot of stuff but it’s just not enough for us. Like beverly hills is a nice school i ain’t gone lie it’s like the bestest school i seen so far but thats what l.a jordan need. Problly some of the other schools out here in l.a need that too but im just sayin we need nice stuff too. L.a jordan is a nice school i we like it that’s why we trynna make this better and a better place fo us so we can feel free and safe. What really caused this promblem is that beverly hills high school get better rooms and are school gotta be next to the projects i think the goverment is racist.
